Poofs, ruffles and giant bows - nothing said flamboyant 1980s fashion better than the designs of Christian LaCroix. The designer was working for the House of Jean Patou when, in 1987, he joined forces with Bernard Arnault to create the couture house of Christian LaCroix. After exploding onto the Paris fashion scene, LaCroix quickly earned his place as the darling of outrageous excess. Unfortunately, as 1980s ostentation made way for 1990s minimalism, LaCroix found his popularity greatly diminished. Later attempts at ready-to-wear, jeans and fragrances met with minimal success. From 2002 to 2005, he assumed the design helm at the House of Pucci, while continuing his role as artistic director for his own fashion house, designing the couture, signature and diffusion collections. In 2009, the Christian Lacroix name was sold as licenses, and the design firm closed. In 2010 he was hired as the artistic director of the French Mint. (Courtesy of the Vintage Fashion Guild)
