The Marston Company was a major department store based in San Diego, California and established in 1878 by George Marston. For 86 years, Marston's was one of Southern California's finest emporiums and a genteel social hub for people of all ages. During the early 20th century, it was the region's exclusive source of Gustav Stickley's prestigious Arts & Crafts oak furniture. Following the building of its largest store in 1912, rapid expansion saw employee numbers swell to over 500 in a progressive environment where women held senior positions and salaries provided a living wage. Marston sold a variety of furniture, small goods, appliances, bedding, sporting goods, toys, silver, clocks and, of course, men's and ladies' fashions. In fact, several levels of the six-floor building were dedicated to clothing and accessories. There was also an exclusive salon on the 4th Floor that sold upmarket dresses, coats and suits commissioned expressly by Marston and carrying their own label. A popular tea room was located on the top floor and was a favourite of the ladies and their companions who lunched and indulged in Marston's legendary fresh coconut cream pies. Shoppers roamed the store in springtime when scented lilacs, trucked in from the backcountry, perfumed the main floor and added a riot of colour. Whilst the store was sold in 1961 Interestingly, the Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) maintains a collection of Marston's memorabilia at Marston House, which is managed as a museum and open to the public.
