Henry Rosenfeld

Henry Rosenfeld was a legendary figure in the dress business, who at his peak was producing 2.5 million garments per year for some of the USA's leading department stores.

In 1942, at a time when fabric shortages had severely crippled the garment trade, Rosenfeld began his business with a meager $40,000 investment He quickly parlayed this into a $30-million per year line he described as a 'class-market dress at mass-market prices’. Women who could afford much more than his $9- $25 dresses found themselves wearing them solely due to their style and workmanship. In fact, he made it chic for rich women to wear inexpensive clothes.

During his heyday, he was called the Henry Ford of the dress business, as well as the Christian Dior from the Bronx.

Rosenfeld, who was originally a shipping clerk for a dress manufacturer, promised his mother that he would be a millionaire before he was 35 (he made it with months to spare). The secret to his success was that he was satisfied with a small profit per item, rather than his competitors who charged much larger mark-up prices for their ranges.

In the 1960s, he lost interest in the dress business and because he did not want anyone else to run it, he liquidated it in 1964. He subsequently started a line of luggage in 1975. Four years later he acquired the license to manufacture Yves Saint Laurent luggage and added other designer names, including Pierre Cardin, Oscar de la Renta and Gloria Vanderbilt. He also started Martec, a mail order company, which deals in watches, electronics equipment and television sets. At his death in 1985, Mr. Rosenfeld was still the chairman of both companies. His grandson currently runs Henry Rosenfeld Inc.
