L’Aiglon was founded in 1919 in Philadelphia, as part of Biberman Brothers, Inc. whose focus was on producing easy care house dresses or wash dresses (referred to back then as tubable). They also made bathrobes and uniforms for maids and nurses. When the L’Aiglon label became operational, the company expanded its clothing lines to make inexpensive but stylish dresses for women and juniors (the latter under the Jeanne D’Arc label). After WW2 , the company further expanded to take advantage of the post-war economic boom and the rising demand for couture and high fashion items. It focused its production on casual dresses that could be "worn and loved by women in every income bracket from the mink and mansion set to the budget and bungalow crowd." Also during the 1950s, L’Aiglon dresses were used as costumes for the popular soap opera: The Edge of Night. Around that time, the average L'Aiglon dress sold for around $30 which, according to today's prices would be $250. Despite over 70 years of success L’Aiglon was forced out of business by 1976. Like many other apparel companies they couldn’t compete with cheaper imported clothing.
