+ Label reads Will Steinman
The Will Steinman Dress Company specialised in wedding, debutante and party dresses in the 50s and 60s. They were particularly known for their attention to detail and fine workmanship. Edward Hoffman, President of the company was quoted as saying " You must be an evening‐dress manufacturer to make evening dresses. This segment of the industry, must employ skilled help, dressmakers who can sew a dress from beginning to end. It just isn’t conducive to assembly line production methods.” That meant that each dress was made from start to finish by only one person, instead of going through an assembly line where different people sewed separate parts of the garment. Mr Hoffman also claimed his company sold more debutante dresses in the $100-$200 range than all his competitors combined. In today’s dollars that would be equivalent to dresses in the $800-$1600 range! Though this dress company is not well known today, among vintage clothing collectors it is considered a very desirable label.
Condition
A truly amazing and beautiful dress, so typical of this company. It's in good condition for its age, but it does have some tiny age related spots in the skirt. I had this dress dry cleaned and then used a water spritz and sunlight to lighten these spots. Most have disappeared and subsequent treatment by the new owner might eliminate the few remaining. Having said that they are hardly noticeable anyway. A fine line remains in places where the dress was let down at some stage, again hardly worth mentioning, A couple of snaps are missing from the back bow area but can be easily replaced. All in all, one of the prettiest and unique dresses I have listed this year. Cleaned and ready to wear. Please drop us a line if your require additional information about this listing.
