Don Loper
Don Loper had a number of professions before he came to costume design, he was a dancer, choreographer, actor, director, costume and set designer. In 1946, he opened a sophisticated couture dress salon on Sunset Boulevard. The lavishly appointed salon showcased a bevy of magnificent gowns, cocktail dresses, suits, dresses and coats - all with hugely expensive price tags. His designs, which embodied the chic elegance of the period, were very much prized by Hollywood's elite movie stars and by socialites alike. So much so that Lucille Ball, in her hit TV show I Love Lucy dedicated an entire episode to the designer. Today, Don Loper designs often come with hefty price tags, especially the earlier ones. As with Lilli Ann, one can usually spot a Don Loper original by the look, design and cut - additionally, his work often features a quirky design element.
